A novel way of spreading the green word – via underwear

A group of students came up with an original way of persuading passers-by to go green this week – by hanging 350 pieces of underwear outside their college halls.

The group, from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, wanted to raise awareness about carbon emissions – 350 parts per million is the amount of carbon dioxide the earth can support before it suffers irreversible damage.

Leader Lauren Quintrell told the Meadville Tribune that they had planned on hanging out sheets, but found that their fellow students were none too keen on giving up their comfy beds, even for the sake of the environment.

“We thought ‘why not underwear?’” she commented. However, even this proved tough and the gang had to resort to raiding the university’s lost and found in order to gather enough bras and knickers.

The serious point behind the stunt was to remind people that they should hang out their smalls and other washing to dry naturally where possible, since tumble dryers use large amounts of energy.

So, what did the students gather from the experiment?

“We found out that people aren’t keen on letting you borrow their underwear,” Quintrell remarked.

Anyone thinking about recreating the students’ activism should pay a visit to lingerieplease.co.uk to make sure they can put nice, shiny new underwear on show.
