One of Britain’s biggest department stores has reported massive increases in the sales of slimming control pants as the festive season approaches.

Annette Warburton, head of lingerie at Debenhams, told the Telegraph that the knickers, which will hold in all your lumps and bumps while remaining invisible under that party dress, are the fastest selling underwear line in the shop’s history, growing 982 per cent since last year alone.

Explaining their appeal, she commented: “Spending a lot of money on a beautiful designer dress, only to have everyone paying more attention to the outline of your knickers is always a bitter disappointment.”

Hilary Alexander, fashion director for the Telegraph, went one further and said that women should avoid the VPL (visible panty line) at all costs: “Going out with one is a total fashion disaster; you are virtually a social pariah.”

Underwear company Sloggi is to crown the world’s best bum this week at a ceremony held in Paris.

Georgina Griffiths, a 21-year-old from Wellingborough in the UK, is among the finalists from 29 countries after winning the title of Britain’s Best Bum back in October.

Sickeningly for more than a few new mothers, her win came only three months after giving birth to her daughter Summer.

Sloggi will judge the bottoms in order to find the one it deems to be the most perfect – although it is not known whether there will be any scientific tests to back this up.

However, the stakes are high – the luck winner will receive 15,000 Euros (£12,350), as well as a modelling contract with Sloggi.

Commenting on the competition, Ms Griffiths said: “I feel quite confident but there are lots of different bums here so it depends what the judges are looking for.”
