Fancy a red underwear run on New Year’s Eve?

With the credit crunch in full swing, many people may be stuck for something to do this New Year’s Eve, if heading down to the pub is not an option.

However, people in inland Valencia already have their solution to the problem – they will run through the streets wearing only red underwear.

According to TypicallySpanish.com, this is a tradition for La Font de la Figuera which dates back 30 years.

Legend has it that a pair of youths were bored after seeing in the stroke of midnight with their families and wanted to do something to celebrate for themselves – so they stripped to their pants and ran through the roads.

Why everyone decided to copy them is another matter entirely, but the run is now a regular event and is open to all in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

For anyone who is considering doing this in the UK this week – we’d advise that you don’t.

Forecasters are predicting sub-zero temperatures for New Year’s Eve, with minus five degrees C possible in some areas.

Far from being a great way to welcome in 2009, this seems like a good way to spend the first weeks of January with pneumonia.
